Manurhin MR73: a legendary revolver

A weapon rich in history

The Manurhin MR73 is the revolver that undoubtedly had the greatest impact on its era, and remains a benchmark in handguns today. Let’s take a trip back to the 70s, the decade that saw the birth of the MR73.

This period was marked by a particular context: the growth of crime and the emergence of terrorism worldwide. To deal with these new threats, the Police and Gendarmerie created elite units, requiring a reliable, safe and secure weapon capable of withstanding repeated fire from powerful ammunition. No weapon available on the market at the time was suitable or powerful enough.

The objectives of these elite units are to neutralise and arrest the perpetrators so that they can be brought to justice: missions that require the ability to fire with great precision. To achieve this objective, intensive training is essential, with weapons loaded as they are in real-life conditions, with powerful ammunition that develops a high stopping capacity, such as the 357 Mag, and capable of withstanding continuous fire.

The design of the MR73 was launched, and it was from here that the MR73 revolver came to life: with the ambition of creating the perfect weapon. Thanks to its outstanding performance, the Manurhin MR73 revolver would become a world-renowned benchmark.

Since its creation, the MR73 has been used in numerous operations by French police forces, including the prestigious GIGN unit. For example, in the 1980s, Commandant Prouteau neutralized an individual who was hiding behind a hostage, using a shoulder shot that knocked him backwards, enabling him to be arrested. There was also the famous GIGN assault in 1994 against the terrorists who had taken the passengers of an A300 airliner hostage. Armed with MR73s, the members of the GIGN intercepted the man and the operation was a success.

Today, the Manurhin MR73 is still used by French services such as the GIGN and the BRI, and continues to be the standard revolver favoured by elite units.

The MR73 has also been seen on the silver screen alongside Jean-Paul Belmondo in Le Marginal, Lino Ventura, Alain Delon and, more recently, Vincent Cassel and Charlize Théron.

A French-designed revolver

In 1973, Manurhin, a manufacturer based in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) and specialising in the manufacture of ammunition and light weapons since 1955, began production of the MR73. From the outset, the manufacturing criteria established were very high, going beyond the usual standards, always with a view to meeting the police force’s demand for a weapon that would stand up to all tests. The barrel is cold-hammered, and the steel comes from the French firm Aubert & Duval, internationally renowned for the quality of its products.

At the end of the 1990s, Chapuis Armes, a French arms manufacturer, bought Manurhin’s handgun division. Since 1998, this famous revolver has been manufactured at the St Bonnet le Château site. The quality of production has been preserved, as has its traditional assembly process, and its historic suppliers, such as Aubert & Duval. Chapuis Armes has nonetheless adapted production to today’s machines, making improvements that are now possible with new technologies. Thanks to the machining quality made possible by the very latest 5-axis machining centres, the MR73 is of even higher quality, and particular attention is paid to the revolver’s finish.

Each MR73 manufactured by Chapuis Armes is fire-tested by a team of highly qualified gunsmiths, who pay particular attention to the trigger weight and the various settings of the revolver. The revolver resistance tests are carried out on each weapon produced with ammunition that generates 30% more pressure than authorised by the CIP for .357 magnum cartridges.

A handgun with exceptional performance

A single-action or double-action revolver, the Manurhin MR73 is a top-quality weapon thanks to its high-flying design. The MR73 is renowned for its reliability and flawless accuracy. As proof, tests have shown that it can withstand 170,000 rounds of .357 Mag ammunition fired at full power without showing any signs of wear. Grouping tests carried out by the GIGN show the MR73 to be extremely accurate.
This accuracy and durability are due in part to the chamber’s roller-finish, which makes the walls as smooth as glass and extremely hard.

One of the features of the MR73 that makes it a unique revolver is the weight of its trigger: the trigger pull is adjustable. This highly precise adjustment is achieved by adjusting the pressure exerted by the trigger return spring via a screw.

In terms of calibres, the .38 or .357 magnum make the MR73 versatile. The 357 magnum delivers a high-powered shot, while the 38 calibre provides a more delicate training shot with no residual energy on impact. In terms of comfort, the MR73 is lightweight and slim, making it quick and easy to hold, with ergonomics to suit all shooters.

Mark Horsley Manurhin MR 73

When I first came across the Manurhin MR73, my first impression was how compact and light it was for a revolver with a reputation for durability. I am a retired police officer, having served for over 35 years. I would have been very confident had I carried the MR73 throughout my policing career. The MR73 is the highest quality production revolver I have ever seen; with the best engineering, fit and finish imaginable on a production gun.
The amount of work and custom parts I’ve put into my S&W far exceeds the cost of buying the Manurhin, but has not come close to matching it. One of the many impressive features of the Manurhin is the incredible quality it offers straight from the factory.
