An essential part of any hunter’s life, the hunting gun and its maintenance are a real concern. It’s the care you give your gun, rifle or carbine that will ensure it lasts as long as possible and maintains its technical characteristics.
Once the day’s hunting is over, the next step is to clean your gun. It’s an essential step for any hunter who is careful with his tool.
It often rains on a hunting day. While it’s important for wildlife and plant life, it’s no friend to firearms: rain can have a detrimental effect on guns, primarily due to the corrosion it causes. After a rainy day, the first thing to do is dry your rifle or shotgun: first with an absorbent cloth, making sure you get between each gap. Then, place the barrel facing downwards so that any remaining water can drain away.
Only when the gun is completely dry can it be cleaned. Cleaning a gun that is still damp would have the opposite effect to that intended and could damage the surface of the materials. This is why it is recommended that you start cleaning 12 hours after the drying phase.
In any case, do not leave your gun to dry near a source of heat such as a fireplace or heater: the wood of the stock will suffer.
Every round fired from your firearm leaves residual gunpowder deposits in the barrel. That’s why you need to clean your gun after every day’s hunting.
The first step in cleaning is to degrease the gun completely using a special product. If small spots of corrosion appear on a metal part, particularly on the barrel, it is possible to rub with oiled steel wool.
Cleaning the barrel is so important. The inside of the barrel is cleaned using a rigid swab to remove gunpowder residue and any traces of corrosion. Next, a softer canon swab is used to remove any small dust particles that may be lodged in the barrel. Finally, to complete the cleaning, polish the inner barrel with a soft cotton pad. In all cases, it is preferable not to put any oil inside the barrel, contrary to what was done in the past to avoid corrosion: coatings and new techniques effectively protect the bore of your barrel on a recent weapon.
Finally, the finishing touch to this cleaning involves applying finishing oil and lubrication. Due to friction, all mechanical parts experience wear and tear, making it essential to lubricate them. Pay particular attention to the breech parts, which are particularly sensitive to wear.
The exterior of the barrel should also be lightly oiled to complete its cleaning. Use a cloth lightly moistened with oil for this purpose
For the wooden stock, there are various products and different shades to choose from, depending on your stock’s finish. These products help to restore the richness of the wood’s colour and nourish it. It is recommended to apply such products once a year, except if you live in a coastal or saline environment, in which case more frequent protection is necessary.
The season is over, and your hunting rifle will be stored in its pouch for several months. It’s time for a thorough cleaning. The aim? To get your gun back in top condition for next season.
First of all, you need to dismantle the main parts for effective cleaning: the bolt, barrel and breech. As with daily cleaning, the gun must be completely dry before applying any product.
To begin with, it is important to lubricate the parts of the gun that have not been dismantled, the slide, the ejector and the breech spring, using a lightly oiled cloth to remove any oil residue. Next, proceed in the same way with the dismantled mechanical parts: oil and wipe with a cloth.
Wooden sticks need special attention. Often soiled after a busy season, the squaring should be carefully cleaned with a small brush. When clean, linseed oil should be applied to nourish and protect the wood.
A word of advice when storing your gun: the room in which your gun will be stored may be subject to fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels, such as a garage or basement. In this case, it may be a good idea to place a humidity absorber in your strongbox to avoid any risk of oxidation.
It’s important to make sure you follow the safety rules before cleaning your gun, in the same way as when handling it at the shooting range or when hunting.
Always handle your firearm with care and follow the safety instructions to ensure safe use.
Another precaution to be taken: fumes. These can come from cleaning products, such as solvents. Potentially harmful, it is advisable to ventilate throughout the cleaning process.
Gunsmiths do more than just sell guns. They can provide you with practical or technical information about your shotgun or carbine. If you have any doubts or questions, don’t hesitate to ask for advice on maintaining and cleaning your equipment, and choosing the most suitable products. You can also entrust him with the maintenance of your gun every off-season, with the assurance of finding your equipment in optimum condition for the start of a new season.
